• Starting at Pentecost this year, I’d like to encourage as many members of St. John’s as possible to join me in the E100 reading program. E100 is 100 passages from the Bible, 50 from the Old Testament and 50 from the New, which give a broad overview of the scriptures as a whole. They are divided into 20 weeks of five readings, which, with a couple of holiday weeks to allow people to catch up, will take us through most of the way to Lent! (...more...)

  • You might have seen our own Amanda featured in this month’s insights, talking about Lay Ministry training. The Living is Giving website has another part of the same interview, in which Amanda was asked about her work with kids. Read it on the Living is Giving website!

The Dish

For the past six years St. John’s Uniting Church Wahroonga has been operating a soup van “The Dish” in Hornsby, each week serving a nourishing three course meal to those who come. It began with soup and now we have an average of a dozen folk who come to share a meal with us.

Clothing is supplied to those in need and extra fresh fruit and vegetables are given to us by Harvest Hub. Baker’s Delight Wahroonga give us the bread rolls to accompany the soup, meals are prepared by members of the Church community, parents of Wahroonga Preparatory School, and members of the wider community.

The Dish is a broad, ecumenical effort with volunteers coming from other Churches in the area: Waitara Adventist, Hornsby Uniting, Cathedral of Our Lady, Waitara; Bobbin Head Anglican Church, Bible Study groups and Turramurra Uniting Church.

In October 2011 the Dish expanded to a second evening, thanks to a great cooperative effort by a number of local schools. The Dish is now regularly supported by members of the Prouille, St. Leo’s, Wahroonga Preparatory School, St. Lucy’s, Abbotsleigh, St. Edmund’s, and Knox Prep. communities.

Last year our ‘more than a soup van’, The Dish, was fortunate to receive a grant from the Community Grants Scheme. These funds have been used to equip an area under the stage to house basic kitchen and storage facilities. This means that there is now a central area from which we can dispense food for the meals and the goods that we store before we give them out to the folk in need of them. Thanks to the NSW State Government for their support, and to Judy Hopwood and Barry O’Farrell who encouraged us to make the application and have taken a personal interest in the work of The Dish.
